So it’s time to go car-shopping. Although “Betsy” has served you well for the past seven years, she’s showing her age, with the miles racking up over years of commuting. And her body panels are rust-streaked from winter road salt. The allure of buying a good pre-owned car is irresistible for many. In addition to better fitting into many budgets, it often gives the biggest bang for the buck, with the first owner taking the largest depreciation hit.
But even if you’ve found what you just know is a cream puff at a car dealer or from a private seller, don’t let your excitement cloud your judgment. For a modest fee, Shepard’s Automotive Center’s top-notch technicians can inspect your prospective purchase for any known defects that can cost you a lot more down the road.
A pre-owned vehicle inspection will cover items such as:
Does the vehicle brake smoothly and evenly? Are there any concerning noises, such as squealing or grinding? Is the brake pad wear on the left front equal to that of the right front?
Abnormal tire wear may indicate the vehicle needs a wheel alignment, or it may even point to previous structural damage that was not repaired properly.
Rust and other corrosion is not always visible in a parking lot. A sharp-eyed technician can get a closer look of problem-prone areas on a vehicle lift. This can reveal potential problem areas that would cause you to move onto another prospect, or at least factor into the purchase price.
Has the vehicle been in a flood? Unscrupulous sellers may do a quick cleanup or remove the carpet and pressure-wash it, but there are areas that are difficult to clean and may reveal residual dirt, grit, or corrosion.
A “check engine” light may not always be illuminated for pending codes that may show up well after the purchase. The problem may be as simple as tightening a loose fuel cap, or it may be as complex as an internal engine problem.
