What to Do If Your Vehicle Breaks Down?

So you are driving down the highway, and all of a sudden your vehicle starts losing power and running roughly. You pull over, and your vehicle shuts off on its own. You cannot get it restarted. Your heart sinks as you realize your vehicle is officially “broken down.”

But being prepared for a possible breakdown can help ease your stress, even  if vehicle breakdowns often happen at the most inopportune times. Here are a few tips to follow if you are involved in a breakdown.

  • Move to the shoulder as quickly as possible, if you are not already: Put your hazard lights on, try to get as close to the grass as possible, if there is a safe shoulder edge on which to park. Before you ever need it, take the time to locate your hazard switch, which may be in the center of the dash, on the side of the steering column, or other locations, depending on make and model.
  • Do not spend time trying to repair the problem: If possible, try to refrain from repairing the vehicle on the side of the road, as it can become very dangerous. Leave any major repairs for a qualified mechanic.
  • Get Everyone Out: Get everyone else out of the vehicle and leave the vehicle through the passenger side of the vehicle, especially if smoke, weird smells, or a fire are present.
  • Call for Help: If you have roadside assistance through your insurance, now is a perfect time to call them so that they can get you and your passengers off of the side of the road and get your vehicle to a repair shop. Many breakdown recovery/insurance roadside companies give priority to highway calls due to the extra danger the passengers face on the side of highways. Before you need it, take the time to find out what coverage you have and be sure your insurance card or motorist club card are readily accessible in an emergency.
  • Wait Somewhere safe: If you are on the interstate or highway, get as far away from the vehicle as possible. Cars passing at high speeds can be dangerous to you and your passengers.

Vehicle breakdowns happen to just about everyone at some point. This time can be very dangerous and hard to deal with for anyone. It’s important to knowing what to do if your vehicle breaks down on the side of the road.
